Hardwood flooring is beautiful and long lasting. It reduces dust and allergens. Daily upkeep is easy by sweeping, vacuuming, or wiping clean. For most products the topcoat can be buffed to remove scratches and then recoated to add more coating to wear on. The thicker products can be sanded down to bare wood and refinished every 15 to 20 years. Because of this servicability, the thicker wood floors will last for 50 to 100 years and add value and beauty to the structure. The hardwood flooring industry is seperate from the retail flooring industry. There are hardwood flooring products that are an industry standard and they've been around for decades and they will be available in the future. These products are good options because the product can always be located for adding onto or repairing existing flooring. There are a few drawbacks to some wood flooring. The solid wood floors will expand and contract in relation to humidity and moisture. So you must control your humidity and expect some movement throughout the seasonal changes. "Hardwood" is a relative term refering to deciduous trees as compared to softwoods from coniferous trees. Hardwoods will still dent and scratch so the limitations must be respected or you will destroy the flooring. Some of the prefinished hardwood flooring has coatings that are designed so other products will not stick to them. This can prevent the option to recoat the floors and you have no option except to live with the flooring until you want to sand it down to bare wood and completely refinish the floor. Some wood flooring products from the retail flooring industry are extremely thin and there is not enough wear layer to sand and refinish the flooring. So buyers should beware and talk to experienced hardwood refinishers before buying hardwood flooring.
